Measuring for a shower door

You do not need exact, professional measurements to ask for an estimate. But knowing which measurements you will be asked for makes the process faster, and helps avoid surprises later.

The width of the opening

This is the distance across the shower opening, wall to wall, where the door will sit. Measuring in a couple of places — top, middle, and bottom — is useful, because walls are not always perfectly straight. If the numbers differ, that is worth mentioning.

The height

This is the height from the shower base or tub edge up to where the door or panel would end. Some people want a door that goes to the ceiling, others prefer a standard height. Either way, a rough height is enough to start.

The type of opening

Is it a single opening with a door, a corner setup with two sides, or a walk-in with a fixed panel? The shape of the shower matters as much as its size, so describing the layout in a sentence or two helps.

Anything unusual

Sloped ceilings, a bench or seat inside the shower, a half-wall, or a tub instead of a shower base are all worth noting. Photos can help too — a link to a photo of the opening is something you can share with your estimate request.

None of this needs to be perfect. A rough width, a rough height, the type of opening, and your location are a solid starting point for an estimate.
